If you are a family with a disabled child and on a low income, it’s important that you call your energy supplier to see whether you qualify for a discount or a rebate worth up to £120 under the government’s new “Warm Home Discount Scheme“. The main group who benefit are pensioners – however some energy companies have included families with disabled children on a low income. Who qualifies and how much discount you can get, varies from provider to provider. Don’t leave it too late because five out of six energy companies recently admitted that they have a limited amount of money for the scheme!

Couples caring for a disabled child are at greater risk of problems in their relationship, and relation breakdown. The charity Relate wants to help families with a disabled child to strengthen their relationships. They are currently offering up to four free or subsidised counselling sessions in our area. Over the past 18 months, volunteers from the Parent Carer Forum have been working in partnership with a group of officers from Early Years, SNIPS and the Childminding Network to improve childcare for disabled children in Sheffield. The group was given a ring-fenced budget to work with, and was very willing to take on board parents’ proposals. As a result, the following initiatives have now been implemented:

In December 2010, the Children’s Minister announced that the Government will be providing local authorities with £800m over the next four years to fund short breaks for families with disabled children. This represents approx £200m per year, the highest ever investment in short breaks.
