• Welcome to the Sheffield Parent Carer Forum

    • We are an independent group of parents and carers of children and young people (0-25) with special educational needs and disabilities. Our main aim is to ensure the needs of our children are met. We bring together parent carers from across Sheffield to provide mutual support, exchange information, and influence policy and practice. We have over 2,000 members.

  • Information session: Supporting siblings (evening)

    • Do you worry about the siblings of your disabled child? You might be wondering if you are you giving them enough time, how you can support them, or how to explain their brother’s or sister’s needs to them. Perhaps you feel guilty for letting them “get on with it” as they seem to cope?

Giving attention to a sibling may seem like another task in a busy family, but it helps to improve family life for everyone.

Come along to this session if you’d like to learn more about siblings’ needs and how to support them. You’ll meet other parents with similar concerns and together find ways forward to improve siblings’ lives. This session will be repeated on 17 March 2020.

  • Information session: Children with Restricted Diets (FULL)

    • This session is now fully booked. Please go on the waiting list to be notified if spaces become available.

Is your child a very “faddy eater”? Is this impacting on family life? Are you worried that your child might not be getting all the nutrition they need?

This workshop will be led by a Senior Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in Paediatric Dysphagia. We will look at the types of restricted diets children can have and the reasons why children restrict their diet. We will cover the evidence base for supporting children with restricted diets and what that means in practice, at home and at school.

  • Information session: Managing stress (evening)

    • Everyone has stress in their lives – but parents of children with additional needs often have a completely different list of stressors from everyone else. You may be fighting with services to get the right support for your child, or worrying about their transition to a new school. You are probably juggling lots competing demands on your time, like work, appointments, siblings and elderly parents.

This session is an opportunity to take some time out and explore how to look after yourself. You are your family’s “glue” and if stress overcomes you, then they will struggle.

This session will be repeated on 24 March 2020.
